Rental moving bins come in a standard size for a reason: uniformity is the whole advantage. Here's what actually fits and how to pack to that size.
What a standard rental bin holds
A standard reusable moving bin is close in volume to a medium cardboard box — roughly 27 gallons — with a footprint designed to stack and to fit through a normal doorway on a dolly.
That size is deliberate. Bigger containers get overloaded and become unliftable; smaller ones multiply the number of trips.
What fits in one bin
- About 20–25 hardcover books (fill only halfway by volume).
- A full kitchen cabinet of dishes, wrapped.
- Two to three dresser drawers of folded clothes.
- A bathroom's worth of toiletries and towels with room to spare.
- One large pot, a colander and assorted utensils.
Weight, not volume, is the real limit
Keep each bin under about 40 pounds. A bin packed edge to edge with books is technically fine for the bin and terrible for your back. Mix heavy items with light ones so every container is liftable by one person.
What doesn't belong in a bin
- Tall lamps, mirrors and framed art — wrap these separately.
- Liquids that can leak, unless bagged.
- Anything hazardous: paint, propane, fuel.
- Hanging clothes, which move better on a rod or in a wardrobe box.
