Moving stress mostly comes from decisions made under time pressure. Remove the decisions ahead of time and the day itself gets a lot calmer.
1–4: Before you pack a thing
- Set the date first and work backward — every other decision hangs on it.
- Declutter before you pack, not while you pack. They're different tasks and mixing them stalls you.
- Book movers and bins early; end-of-month dates fill up.
- Photograph the back of your TV and electronics before unplugging anything.
5–7: While packing
- Use containers that are all the same size so you can stack and plan loads.
- Label the lid and one side of every container by room, not by contents alone.
- Pack an essentials bin for each person and load it last.
8–10: Move day and after
- Get kids and pets out of the house for the day — it's the single biggest stress reducer.
- Make the beds first at the new place, before you unpack anything else.
- Give yourself a week to unpack. Nothing bad happens if the guest room stays boxed.
The underrated one: eliminate cleanup
The last stage of a cardboard move is a chore nobody plans for — a garage full of flattened boxes when you're already tired. With rented bins, cleanup is a phone call: we come get them.
